White Gold Cornwall works with children, young people, and vulnerable adults across the whole of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly providing 1:1 mentoring support to help them navigate through life’s challenges.

We aim to support, guide and, if appropriate, challenge young people who:

  • Are vulnerable or at risk.
  • Present unacceptable or challenging behaviour.
  • Are excluded from, or failing to engage in, education.
  • Lack confidence, self-esteem and/or social skills.
  • Are involved, or at risk of becoming involved, with the Law.

Due to the nature of our pending referrals, we are looking for a Male Engagement Worker who is experienced in supporting young people and vulnerable adults, to engage informally with children, young people, and young adults e.g., a country walk, coffee, and chat, sharing hobbies, visiting local museums, swimming, sports, etc. on a self-employed sessional basis. Sessions will generally be for a minimum of two hours and can be for six weeks or can continue for over 12 months, depending on the needs of the young person.

You would be fully trained and insured by us to work safely with young people. You will need to hold a full UK driving license and have access to your own vehicle. The successful applicant(s) would also need to obtain Business Car Insurance and be prepared to travel for which mileage will be paid. For this particular position we will be seeking someone who is based in Mid Cornwall but willing to travel.

As well as your own transport, some of the most important qualities needed are patience, a sense of humour, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and a commitment to supporting vulnerable children, young people and sometime adults, in a non-judgemental mentoring role. You will need to be IT literate and able to use a laptop and associated programs as we are now using a new Case Management System which all staff will be required to use. White Gold Cornwall will provide all the necessary hardware required.

Job Title: Engagement Worker

Responsible to: Operations Manager – Mid Cornwall

Type of Employment: Self-employed Sessional Basis

Hours: 10 – 20 hours available

Pay: £16.00 per hour (standard), £25.00 per hour (weekend)

Location: Based in Redruth area and prepared to travel to all areas from Penzance – St Ives – Hayle – Camborne – Redruth – Truro – Threemilestone – St Agnes

Role Profile

Our Engagement Workers will be required to:

  • Engage with young people and or vulnerable adults from ages 5 – 35 years on a 1:1 basis, who find themselves needing additional support, working with the referrers and carers to provide the appropriate support required with understanding, patience and kindness.
  • Provide high quality and detailed monthly reports on all young people engaged with and how they are being supported to meet the outcomes set by the referrer.
  • Attend multi-agency meetings, Children in Need meetings, and other meetings as requested by the referrers to act as an advocate for all young people supported.
  • Attend regular supervisions with Operational Manager to discuss performance and caseload.
  • Undergo training as required by the organisation.
  • Communicate with referrers/carers, sometimes outside of your normal working hours, to discuss the progress/ next steps for a young person.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and interventions

Person specification

The role of Engagement Worker requires candidates who will possess:

Essential:

  • Experience of supporting young people and vulnerable adults in a variety of situations and circumstances and understanding their needs, particularly young people who struggle with mental health, anxiety and SEND.
  • Work without direct supervision
  • Effective communication – both written and verbal with the ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders, including – teachers, families, other agencies and young people.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality and GDPR
  • Patient, adaptable and the ability to problem solve
  • Positivity and enthusiasm, with a good sense of humour
  • Reliability and time keeping
  • Good record keeping and organisation
  • Competent IT skills with access to Microsoft Office and Zoom
  • Full driving licence with access to a vehicle and appropriate business insurance
  • Lives in Cornwall (preferably Redruth area)

Desirable:

  • Formal qualifications of working with children and young people
  • Experience/knowledge of working with mental health services
  • Experience/knowledge of drug and alcohol services
  • Experience/knowledge of working with Social Care/Services
  • An understanding of ACEs – Adverse Childhood Experiences
  • Experience/knowledge of Trauma Informed Approaches
  • Experience in using risk assessments and risk management
  • Availability to travel slightly further, in exceptional circumstances to some vulnerable young people
  • Knowledge of the local amenities and recreational opportunities available
